Who are you and what do you do?
Derek Dysart. I consider myself a freelance web developer first and a professional photographer second. I specialize mainly in on-location child and family portraits as well as stock photography.
Why are you attending PhotoCampMilwaukee?
I figured since I helped organize I should probably show up. More seriously, the idea for the event came after attending BarCampMilwaukee3. I wanted to see if we could channel all the energy that permeates the Milwaukee area through all aspects of photography into one event where everyone can learn from and contribute to that energy.
What’s in your camera bag?
Always:
Canon 20D
Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS
Canon EF 50mm f/1.2L
Canon 580EXII
Nikon SB-24
Three “Poverty Wizards”, various gels for the flashes, CF cards, gaffer tape
Sometimes:
2 Manfrotto Nano Lightstands and Westcott double fold umbrellas with flash adapters
Ashai Pentax K1000 w/50mm f/2
Canon Digial elph S110
If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?
Either “Getting started with off camera lighting with the least amount of money” or “Single strobe portrait lighting”.
If you were to attend your dream session, what would it be about?
Any session dealing with food photography, including how to get assignments.
Tell us one random fact about yourself.
Highlight of my 18th birthday was shaking the hand of Benoit Mandelbrot at a Nobel Conference.
