The Numbers

by raster on April 27, 2009

Don’t worry about being intimidated at PhotoCamp, as most of the folks who have registered fall into the Amateur category.

Total Beginner 17
Amateur 90
Semi-Professional 51
Professional Photographer 7
Model 4

We do have some Total Beginners but it looks like there will be plenty of people there to help them learn what they need to get comfortable with photography.

And hey, we’ve even got a few Professionals Photographers there to share their wisdom with the people…

It looks like a great mix of skill levels!

(Note: We’ll update this post as more people register…)

100+

by raster on April 25, 2009

Right now we have over 100 people registered for PhotoCamp… That’s pretty cool!

We’re excited about the possibilities for people to connect and learn from each other. We’ve got a good range of experience in those registered… While the majority seem to be in the amateur range, there’s some pros and some newbies coming as well, but I’m confident everyone will find something unique to share with others.

I know you’ve already registered, but what about your friend, you know, the one who really wants to learn a bit more about photography, or your other friend, who is really interested in modeling, but has no idea where to start… Tell them about PhotoCamp, and then send them to the registration page.

The Models Are Coming!

by raster on April 24, 2009

What is a day of photos without models?

Our good pal Jenn at Bucketworks has put out the call for anyone who likes modeling to come to PhotoCamp, so if you are interested in doing portraits or otherwise working with a model for some of your shooting, we should have some on hand. How cool is that!?

We’ve even tweaked the registration to allow models to register.

Photographers, bring photo release forms… Models, bring business cards… I’m sure you will all want to work out one of those TF* deals I keep hearing about…

Fans of Film?

by raster on April 23, 2009

Are you a film shooter? They still exist you know!

Larry Clarkin just dropped off a bunch of 35mm film, and I know a few people mentioned the possibility of setting up a darkroom at PhotoCamp, so while it may be a (mostly) digital world we live in, we are happy to welcome and film fans at PhotoCamp.

Got some film supplies, a film camera, or any of that old-time photo gear? Bring it along and hopefully some other film fans can do something cool with it…

The Schedule

by raster on April 23, 2009

OK folks, this is the schedule…

  • 5:00AM “Unofficial” PhotoWalk
  • 9:00AM Doors open for PhotoCamp
  • 10:00AM Opening Ceremonies
  • 11:00AM – 1:00PM Lunch/Networking
  • 1:00PM – 5:00PM Sessions/Shoots/Etc.
  • 5:00PM – 6:30PM Dinner
  • 6:30PM – 8:30PM Sessions/Shoots/Etc.
  • 8:30PM – Closing Ceremonies!

If you want the “early experience” there is (supposedly) a group meeting around 5AM to do a sunrise photowalk… We’ll try to get details from one of the brave souls doing that… But, the real deal… PhotoCamp officially opens at 9AM. Show up around 9AM, and we’ll get the ball rolling by 10AM with introductions and explanations of how it all works. You’ll also have a good chance to mingle and network either before the Opening Ceremonies or afterward while we dine. (Yes, lunch will be provided…)

After lunch we go straight into the good stuff, sessions, shoots, walks, discussions… We take another break for dinner (thanks to those sponsors!) and then back into more sessions, shoots, walks, and discussions. We gather again at 8:30PM and close it up.

Oh, we’re also working on a special “Post Processing Party” – a party after PhotoCamp where we can let the good times roll a bit more, with food, and “special” beverages… There would probably be a small cover charge for this, though we’re also trying to get a party sponsor if possible. (Are you interested?)

Prepare Thyself for PhotoCamp!

by raster on April 15, 2009

Matt on the FlickrWalk
Photo by pixn8tr and it’s Some Rights Reserved

You need to start getting ready for PhotoCamp right now!

But how?

Well, think about the little things… do you have enough memory cards? You might be shooting for 12+ hours… Bring enough cards, or a computer/device to offload images if you don’t have enough cards. (But hey, cards are cheap! Why not buy a few more…)

And batteries! Do you have a spare battery for your DSLR, or AA’s or whatever your camera uses? Bring your charger just in case… you wouldn’t want a dead battery to ruin all your fun.

Gosh, what else should you bring? How about some masking tape and a sharpie to label all of your stuff (or better yet, do it ahead of time!) With 100+ people there, you’d hate to get your gear mixed up with someone else’s gear.

Also, it’s always good to bring a few bucks along… We’ll be providing meals, but The Quasi Cafe inside Bucketworks will have a variety of snacks and beverages on sale if you need something special.

Oh, and business cards, or moo cards, or at least a pen and some blank index cards… those always come in handy.

Also… very important… don’t forget your camera!

Any other suggestions?

James Conway Who are you and what do you do?
I’m James Conway, I own C2 Graphics Productivity Solutions and James Conway Photography. I’m an Adobe Certified Instructor for Photoshop, Illustrator, Flash and Dreamweaver. My two most popular classes are Standards Based Web Design and Flash Actionscripting. I’ve been involved in the creative end of the digital industry since the beginning, I managed one of Milwaukee’s first digital imaging centers in the early nineties using Photoshop 1 and Illustrator 88. As far as photography, I have a studio in the 5th ward where I shoot a great deal of small product catalog work but in recent years I’ve been moving into fashion, beauty and glamour and enjoying it immensely.

Why are you attending PhotoCampMilwaukee?
I’m looking to be surprised. I want to learn something I didn’t know I wanted to learn.

What’s in your camera bag?
Canon 5DMK2 and 5D family with Canon L series lenses

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?
Glamour, fashion or fine art nude photography.
Portrait and Glamour retouching in Photoshop.
Asset management & metadata.

If you were to attend your dream session, what would it be about?
It would involve Kate Moss, that’s for sure. Wait, no, no that’s not what I meant, I mean…

No, I guess it is what I meant. Is Kate going to be at camp?

Otherwise I’m always interested when someone talks about something they have an absolute passion for.

Tell us one random fact about yourself.
During a one year period I ate a burrito from Chipotle or Qdoba 350 days out of 365. I now need to eat salads only.
