Proposed Schedule… and a Meeting

by raster on April 9, 2009

How are we doing? We’re doing great!

We’re starting to discuss the actual schedule of the day… so if you have any feedback, comments, or suggestions, see the thread in the Google Group and let us know what you think.

Also, if you want to get more involved in making PhotoCamp happen (by volunteering to take on a specific task, or just by having your voice heard in person) come down to Bucketworks on Saturday, April 11, 2009 at 11AM for a meeting to discuss with the fine folks at Bucketworks how PhotoCamp will actually run.

James Carlson Who are you and what do you do?
My name is James Carlson, and I’m the Executive Director and Founder of the School Factory, a non-profit organization that creates places like Bucketworks and programs like the Milwaukee Spotlight Student Film Festival. I’m passionate about community growth and development, and the growth of the individual through the expression of their passions in the world. I’m fascinated by photography because it’s such an accessible medium of expression for nearly all ages; my work with the film festival has shown me what happens when we put cameras in kids hands, for example. I see adults with cameras and they act just a little more kid-like: curious, eyes-open, paying attention. It’s healthy.

Why are you attending PhotoCampMilwaukee?
I’m interested in learning how to frame my photos better; I am striving for the first-shot-right-shot level of skill with my camera, which is difficult because I’ve been used to shooting-and-deleting anything that isn’t quite right. I’d also like to meet other photographers and involve them in a large-scale collaborative project I’ve been working on for the last 6 years, the Eyes of Gaia, which is a 10′ x 20′ map of Earth made of 10,000 human eyes (just the irises) and I have only 3,700 so far. I’m also excited about Camp-style events in general and wouldn’t pass up a chance to attend one–the networking is so terrific, and the learnings have always been useful to me in the past. Finally, I’ll have to be there because the event takes place at Bucketworks!

What’s in your camera bag?
Currently I shoot with a Canon Digital Rebel XSi, having grown up from my original Powershot G2.
Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens
Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II Lens
Canon SpeedLite 430EX Flash

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?
I’d lead a session about iris photography, because I want to compile more eyes for my collection (currently, I have 3,700 eyes.) I’d spend time focusing on macro photo techniques as well, as I’ve had lots of experience with this type of photography. I’d also enjoy leading a session about photograph management–not the taking of the pictures, but the rest of the process after the picture is taken. Finally, I’d enjoy leading a photo session for kids, where they set up and shoot portraits of their parents. We’ll see if we get enough kids for this!

If you were to attend your dream session, what would it be about?
I’d like to learn more about action photography. There are always events at Bucketworks and they frequently happen in low light. How do you capture movement and action in low light?

Tell us one random fact about yourself.
I’m a father of two daughters, age 6 and 12.

Bev Johnson…I’m a mom, wife and dental hygienist. I enjoy helping in my kid’s classrooms and being the unofficial official photographer for classroom parties!!

Blake HallWho are you and what do you do?
I am a web developer for the Center for Media and Democracy. I spend most of my day maintaining Linux servers, and writing PHP (with the occasional Python or Ruby utility script). I’m also a Drupal contributor and evangelist.

Why are you attending PhotoCampMilwaukee?
I really want to learn how to get the most of out my DSLR, and to increase my Photoshop-fu. I’d also like to learn tips and tricks for long term photo storage and management, and how to take advantage of GPS & Geo-tagging.

What’s in your camera bag?
Right now I have at least one of the following with me at all times:
(*) iPhone
(*) Nikon D40 (18-55mm, 70-300mm, 50mm lenses)
(*) Panasonic Lumix Point & Shoot

If you were to lead a session, what would it be about?
Either something related to Creative Commons, or Lightroom2 for dummies.

If you were to attend your dream session, what would it be about?
Paparazzi 101 (How to make millions of dollars taking pictures of drunken celebrities — without moving to LA)*
* either that or Portrait 101

Tell us one random fact about yourself.
When I got married I copied all the guests memory cards after our reception so I’d have all the photos of the event (which totaled about 4k pictures).

Just two months away…

by raster on March 2, 2009

Imagine if you could take a full day to immerse yourself in the world of photography…. That’s what we hope to do on May 2, 2009 at PhotoCampMilwaukee.

As I’m writing this, it’s March 2, 2009 and that means we have only two months until PhotoCampMilwaukee. We’re starting to get pretty excited about it!

It’s been great to get to know people by seeing their profiles on the site (Who’s Attending?) and if you want yours posted, get in touch and send us your info. It’ll be great to get together the day of the event and already know who you might really want to talk to about some obscure topic…

Also, we are still in need of sponsors… We do have some great ones so far, but still need a few more… If you are interested, find out more.

Starting this week we’ll be doing a lot more promotion to let local photographers know about PhotoCamp, and invite them to be a part of it, so tell your friends!
